Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Ensuring Your Fire Extinguisher Works When You Need It Most

Fire extinguishers are mandatory in almost all buildings and facilities, and now their regular maintenance is also required by law.

The purpose of fire extinguisher maintenance is to ensure that each device functions properly when needed — no one wants to discover a non-working extinguisher during a fire emergency.

Fire extinguishers are designed to be stored in stable environments — with consistent temperature and dry air.

An extinguisher located in such conditions must be inspected by a certified specialist every two years.

Those installed in vehicles, vessels, or outdoor areas must be checked once a year.

In addition, the building owner is responsible for visually inspecting fire extinguishers every quarter to ensure they remain in good condition.

Steps in a Fire Extinguisher Inspection

During a professional inspection, the following steps are carried out:

  • Visual inspection – assessing the extinguisher’s condition for mechanical damage or corrosion.

  • Checking and updating the printed instructions on the extinguisher.

  • Testing the trigger, valve, seal, and hose for functionality.

  • Pressure check – or weighing, in the case of CO₂ extinguishers.

  • Assessing the condition of the extinguishing agent, such as powder in powder extinguishers.

  • Verifying compliance with applicable standards and safety regulations.

All procedures follow the manufacturer’s maintenance manual, Estonian national standards, and the regulations of the Minister of the Interior.
